Student Guide

Welcome to Montreal Improv

What are people saying about our workshops?

Excellent teachers who clearly know what they are talking about.
I was surprised at how much I learned in just 4 classes!
The games and exercises we did were perfect for beginning. The lessons were pertinent to the improv world, and the real world! So much to take out of the class.
Improv nights are my favourite day of the week. What a perfect little community.
I think it is fantastic (and quite generous) that you offer students free admission to shows.

March 30th 2020

Hi everyone,

In this time of uncertainty, we’d like to share our plans relating to our current classes.

We have contacted our students to inform them that we are crediting them a full session's worth of classes for those that are currently postponed. When classes restart students will have a guaranteed spot that they can choose to fill or not at that time.

All classes will restart from the first week in order to ensure proper continuity. Some classes may need to be rescheduled to a future session depending on the state of things when we reopen.

We appreciate your understanding as we all try to work through this challenging situation and we value your continued support of Montreal Improv.

True-Life Storytelling

Transform your life experiences into a compelling narrative.

This class will give you the tools to transform the raw materials of your day-to-day life and personal history into moving and entertaining stories. The focus is on the performative aspect of storytelling, in the vein of shows like The Moth, Risk, or Confabulation. Over the course seven weeks, you will create, develop, write, practice, workshop, and perform one seven-minute true-life story. Elements that will be covered include: storytelling basics, how to think of ideas for stories, discovering your voice, creating conflict, developing structure, using imagery and detail, performing, how to practice, and more. You will leave this class with one polished story, and with the tools to create and develop many stories about your life. The focus will be on short pieces, but these skills are equally applicable to longer narratives (one-person shows, Fringe shows, etc.) The course will include some theory, but classes will mostly be made up of practical in-class activities, including some in-class writing. Expect approximately two hours of homework per week. Appropriate for both beginner and more experienced storytellers. There will be a graduation show at the end of the course (not compulsory).
