Sketch from Improv with Kevin McDonald
Sketch from Improv with Kevin McDonald
This workshop explores how to turn improvised scenes into fully realized comedy sketches. Students will begin by improvising short scenes in small groups, then work together to break down what happened onstage — identifying strong comedic moments, characters, and story ideas worth developing. With guided discussion and coaching from Kevin McDonald, each scene will be reshaped and performed again with intention.
In the second half of the workshop, students will improvise new scenes and work independently to transform them into sketches of their own. Each sketch will be performed, followed by feedback and notes focused on strengthening comedy, clarity, and structure.

KEVIN MCDONALD
Kevin McDonald is a comedian, actor, writer, and director, best known as a founding member of the iconic sketch troupe The Kids in the Hall. He co-founded the group with Dave Foley after meeting at Toronto’s Second City, and the groundbreaking television series ran from 1988–1995, later returning with a new season on Amazon Prime.
On Kids in the Hall, McDonald created many beloved recurring characters, including The King of Empty Promises, Sir Simon Milligan, and Jerry Sizzler. His film credits include Galaxy Quest, Sky High, Boy Meets Girl, Epic Movie, and voice work in Lilo & Stitch and Lilo & Stitch: The Series.
Kevin has appeared on numerous television shows, including Seinfeld, Friends, That ’70s Show, Arrested Development, and MADtv. His extensive voice work includes Invader Zim, The Angry Beavers, Catscratch, Clerks: The Animated Series, and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.
In 2006, he hosted Sketch with Kevin McDonald for CBC Television, which won a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Taped Live Performance. He was recently at the Just for Laughs Festival, with the reunion of Kids in the Hall, and in his solo show Hammy and the Kids, inspired by his family and his time in the troupe and the CBC series Death Comes to Town.
Kevin McDonald has done many other projects he may or may not remember - like a podcast from 2016 to 2020 - and comedy is better for it.
