Let’s Get Physical

It's easy to rely on talky, emotionally-detached improv. In this workshop, we'll enjoy exploring the physical and theatrical side of making stuff up. By making personal and cooperative physical choices we can create more visually and emotionally interesting scenes.

Pulling Premise

A clearly stated premise-based initiation can get a scene right into the thick of the funny. In this workshop, we'll address the difference between organic and premise-based initiations and practice harvesting the funniest ideas from the opening. We'll work on nailing down game at the tops of scenes so that we can get right to playing that game.

Sketch from Improv

This workshop explores how to turn improvised scenes into fully realized comedy sketches. Students will begin by improvising short scenes in small groups, then work together to break down what happened onstage — identifying strong comedic moments, characters, and story ideas worth developing. With guided discussion and coaching from Kevin McDonald, each scene will be reshaped and performed again with intention.

In the second half of the workshop, students will improvise new scenes and work independently to transform them into sketches of their own. Each sketch will be performed, followed by feedback and notes focused on strengthening comedy, clarity, and structure.

One Line Premise

This is a focused sketch-writing workshop, designed to help you turn a simple idea into a full comedy scene. (There will be no improvising or performing.)

Each student must arrive with a one-line premise for a sketch (for example:“What if a guy was $10 short of being a millionaire?”). Together, we’ll break down each premise and work through how that idea can become a strong, playable sketch.

After the workshop, students will go home and write their sketch based on their premise. Sketches can be submitted afterward, and Kevin McDonald will provide written notes, which will be shared with students.
